That did the trick indeed! Good thing too, because the 
Cygwin list does not seem to like my posts.

I found out however that the current cairo libraties are 
missing a routine which makes it impossible to build the 
wincairo device: cairo_win32_surface_create. For the 
moment I will therefore exclude that device.
