Yes, it is a puzzle. It may be connected to the behaviour I noticed for MinGW 
and MSYS that I need to tell the examples where to find the drivers and the 
palette files explicitly. IIRC that was not the case previously and it is also 
not the case under Cygwin or bare Windows. For these platforms it suffices to 
expand the PATH to include the directory with the DLLs.
