OK, after a fair bit of investigation and discussion of xslt ways of dealing with this issue I finally decided to fix this the old-fashioned way with sed (revision 11066). I have regenerated the website with this and other tweaks (notably getting rid of the individual news reports because of issues [bad links] with the SF script that generates those).
