How do big images get parsed?

The Macintosh port is coming along nicely.  The images look *very* good
on the Palm; better than what I've seen come from Windows or Unix. One
question; what does one have to do to ensure that big images are parsed
as well?  I've defined the _scaled variable and scaled() function, but
it doesn't work and it feels like there should be more I need to be
doing...
