Applications that write directly to screen coordinates will not work

Yes, especially since I don't have a Handera device or a Linux version
of POSE that works with the Handera ROM.
Also, I want to add VFS support before looking into support for Handera's
hi-res screen.

What's stopping you? Sure, you will "only" get 160x160, but most of
us still survive although we are limited to this "postage stamp" ;-)

Can you use Python on HP-UX 11? If so, then the parser should also work.
Image support requires that netpbm is installed, though.
