Also, what's preventing us from painting the thought bubbles, wristwatch, OR
hourglass in the middle of the screen and then repainting when the load is
done? Hell, let's make 'em 25x25px and paint 'em in the lower-right - that
way, it wouldn't really obscure reading the partially loaded page, but it'd
be fairly clear what's going on.

What makes you think that the hourglass is a Microsoft UI function? Yeah,
Windows uses it, but it's hardly the only system to ever do so...
Personally, I think we should go for a wristwatch. Apple's been using it
since at least 1983, and I haven't seen anyone yet who hasn't intuitively
interpreted it.
