I now tried "make" in both the main directory pilrc-3.0b5 and the unix
directory.
Both results in the message:
make: *** No targets specified and no makefile found.  Stop.

Right. According to the "readme.txt" file included with the PilRC package, you should type


make -f Makefile.generic

I'd forgotten that it isn't just called "Makefile".
