You can't get rid of the <pre> in the parser or viewer. You are doomed! Doomed! (Sorry
I don't
get to say that much, and if I do it in medicine, then the patients get hostile.)
;-)

You would need a HTML preprocessor, or else modify your local Python parser.

The longer term fix will be a style sheet, letting you switch on whether you want
fixed-width
font on a <pre> tag, (as well as colour, underlining, bold, italics etc).

If you can risk beta software, you may want to visit beta.plkr.org and get a newer
viewer.

If all else fails, you could get a free hackmaster, and use one of the free font hacks
to remap
the big font to a small fixed width one for the Plucker app (most font hacks let you
turn of
the font replacements on a per-app basis).

Best wishes,
Robert
