The above I get with a "clean" device with just plucker installed.  On
my "working" device, with years of PalmOS apps, PDBs and preferences,
HotSync *CRASHES* when the jpluck2 conduit is enabled with 2 cards in
the device.  And it crashes regardless of whether there is anything to
install, and regardless of the destination (card or RAM).  As before,
with just one card installed, it works fine.

Rather more disruptive than just "Sync failed"!
