Ethernet cable is not the correct kind of cable for USB, but even if it
were the correct kind of cable you can only go a maximum of 16 ft 5 in (
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Universal_Serial_Bus )
To go further with USB, you need a cable that has inline active
repeaters like this one:
http://www.amazon.com/Tripp-Lite-U026-20M-Extension-Repeater/dp/B006KSLF6E/ref=sr_1_6?ie=UTF8
You should use ethernet cable to connect your friend's computer to your
network and then via the network he can print to your printer.
You just have to make sure that you plug his network connection into the
access point itself, so that it can get to the same network as the rest
of the computers that are connected to the printer. If you plug it into
the network behind your access point, then you won't be able to connect
to the printer at all since it will not be on a different network and it
will be very difficult to swim upstream to make the connection.

If you want it hard wired with USB
Could I do it with something else? I mean, if I put usb connectors on
the ends of cat5 strands it wouldn't actually be usb; would it? I wish
cannon would of put an rj45 port into it...... HEY.... look at that,
they put a plug in it, that's why I couldn't see it. Well, I connected
it to the modem but it still aint working. I connected via my laptop
though..... there isn't 'just the printer'.
If you just connect his computer to your WIFI access point via ethernet, your
access point should allow him to connect to the printer.
Just set the printer up the same way it's setup on your system and the access
point will gateway the connection to his system.
His computer is hard wired to the modem. The modem is hardwired to the
modem. I would think that it would be considered a 'network printer'.
But when I browse for the printer the only thing that shows is the
printer attached to the linux box. I tried connecting to that but
nothing printed.

It is an old pc without a wireless card. I'll try a wireless usb

USB by default can't run that far. If you want it hard wired
with USB, you will need to purchase a USB cable with inline
repeaters. They can get very expensive, especially with the
length you are talkng about, by the time you are done, it might
be just as cheap for him to buy his own printer.
Is there a reason he can't also connect onto the printer via
wireless?

the deal is that my brother's computer doesn't have wireless

(50 ft)- into
the house- out of a wall mount- to his computer (10 ft).
WOW. That is
longer than I thought. that's around 75 feet long in total.
hmmmmm....
I have an empty phone line (cat 3) there already could I use
that?

1 - maybe, depends upon the printer.
2 - do you mean a computer into the printer, not a
printer? Then it
is possible to make a cat5 cable into a USB cable, but
you have to
change the connectors on the end to be USB - probably
not worth the
effort. If the printer has cat5 (what, RJ45?) jacks
then just
connect it to your network, again assuming the printer
can do both.
(Mine can - probably can do all 3 but I have wireless
turned off
on it so use usb and network)
I've taken the liberty of adding 1 and 2 below.

Subject: usb cord
(1) I now run my printer wirelessly. can I also hard
wire a computer
into the
printer? I think so but I want to make sure.
(2) If you can hard wire a printer (I think you mean
computer, as I
said above)
into the printer as well can cat5 be used to make a usb
cord?
