As far as I know, the Internet was created by Americans with tax payer
dollars. The Internet belongs to the taxpayers. If other countries do
not like that they do not have to play. The Internet should stay the
property of the USA.
I think we should think about allowing private networks. Something you
and I would be able to run out of our garage. Why should it cost
$100,000 to become a registrar? Let anyone buy an extension for $100.
Then let the free market dictate what domains go for.
Let the rest of the world take their top level domains and create their
own subnets.
The Internet is an American invention. If the rest of the world does
not like that so what?

And for those who don't trust liberals:

Basically the US had to turn it over, or there would be a rebellion,
and the US controlled ICANN would be forked, and made irrelevant.
It appears that the post-American ICANN will mostly be run the same
way that standards for the web itself (W3), ethernet, and USB work.
ICANN will mostly be run by a consortium of big companies, and to a
lesser extent governments. Some governments will favor easy to censor
internets, and some will favor open internets, and almost all will
want easy to monitor internets, and the companies won't care what
happens. I think we will see flexible solutions so that constituencies
can optimize solutions for their own needs, while still maintaining a
lot interoperability at the edges of subnets.
Organized and coordinated internet Balkanization.

The article states in part “Without the U.S. contract, Icann would
seek to be overseen by another governmental group so as to keep its

Icann become part of the U.N. to make it easier for them to censor
the internet globally. So much for the Obama pledge that the U.S.
would never be replaced by a “government-led or an
inter-governmental organization solution.””.
This could be really bad.
What is the solution?
