moin moin,

got a few hints out of #LibreLounge for some Free Software speech to text
engines.

That would be a great help.

moin moin Harold,

Hmm, I wonder if ffmpeg has something for speech to text.

A quick search turns up some projects using a Google API to convert speech
to text.

I'm going to ask about the speech to text thing in #LibreLounge and see if
they have any suggestions.

Perhaps some of our videophiles will have some suggestions for you.

I know how to setup my own desktop using scripts and other tools. The big
things are to make apps or getting close caption support in gnome, kde and
other desktops, as well as apps to allow the deaf to play a podcast that would
display on the desktop and have more close caption in video's and other ways
for close caption to be useful for the hard of hearing and the deaf.

moin moin,

Yeah, I remember going from basic to C. That was different :).

Are there any particular types of applications you'd like to work on?

Do you have something you'd like to automate for yourself?

ciao,

The last time I did programming was in the 1980's when I did dos basic. Dos
basic doesn't even compare with the programming languages of today.

moin moin Harold,

Helping with accessability is awesome!

If you're not already familiar with programming I suggest a book that uses
a language to teach programming concepts and branch out from there.

I've been reading Practical Programming to re-familiarize myself with
Python. It seems to be a decent book for learning to program. While I
haven't done much development in years, I used to do a lot. As such, I'm
not a beginning programmer, so my evaluation might be biased.

The e-book is DRM free.

Lots of software is written in Python, so there are many opportunities
with it.

A complaint that has come up on this list is KDE's lack of an
accessability API. I know KDE wants to have one, but it hasn't yet
happened.

KDE work would likely be in C++, so you could target that language instead
if you want to work on KDE.

I’m interested in open source projects. I would like to help those with
disabilities to use a computer for anything. But the software isn’t out there
to help those with disabilities. I know because I’m disabled and deaf.

Hi Harold,

Start with the end in mind. What is your goal? Web? Working on Open
source projects?

Knowing that will help us give you feedback.

I'm looking for anyone that can steer me in the right direction for
books or web site that can help me get started.

I currently run Fedora 29, with 1 TB drive, i3-7100 processor and
currently 4 GB ram but will be upgrading to 16 GB ram and with dual
monitors.

So hopefully someone can point me in the right direction for info.
