hmmm...
There might be a problem of two or more sound daemons running at
one time.
Like it happened to me when I was running KDE as my desktop.
KDE starts 'artsd' by default while 'esd' is being used by applications
to play sound. Effectively this means that the sound daemons are
contending to get exclusive access to the /dev/{dsp,audio,mixer}
device set.
In my case 'artsd' had exclusive access to the sound devices, while
'esd' was waiting to get access to the devices to play the sounds.
Use the Control Center to stop 'artsd'. This is the first thing I
do whenever I install and login into any account on a new system.
For starters, pkill artsd, and then play your sounds. If it works,
you're on the right track.
