I don't think that is true. When in legacy mode, you can select which
drives you want active.
You can make this selection in the sub-menu which appears, when you
set to legacy mode.
I'm using Linux on D865GBF and seagate SATA without any problems.

I think legacy mode is required only for distributions with older
kernel. Distros with 2.6.x kernel do detect SATA without any problem.
e.g. SuSE 9.0 didn't detect SATA, so required legacy mode. But SuSE
9.1 detected SATA.
