that is what makes open source software more secure. look at it this
way. since everyone can see the source code, if a hacker can see a
vulnerability, its quite likely that a security expert can see the
vulnerability too. (we assume that there are atleast as many good
people in this world as there are evil).
the same could be said for closed source systems too. but in their
case, the security experts are a small group of paid employees. here,
the source is open to all who think of themselves as able.
as for microsofts' claims, thats all FUD. 
and is linux more secure? a quick google search should give you links
to 2-3 studies. make your own conclusions.
