I've used realmagic IR device on kernel 2.6.

Since you mentioned the driver dbg messages do show some activity, I think 
editing /etc/lircd.conf should solve your problem. Try using irrecord to 
create a custom lircd.conf. Backup your existing /etc/lircd.conf and copy the 
newly created config file in that place. Restart lircd and it should work. Go 
through lirc README and man irrecord carefully. You need to manually chmod 
777 /dev/lircd and some other such stuff.

I'll mail you a lirc installation and configuration note I had prepared some 
time back. That might help you.
