Hi! > discussion. why does the guy want to double click on the rpm file? why Why not? Is it really so difficult to give a GUI for installing rpms? Maybe somethng's already out there. I use console command for rpm, you might be doing the same, but is it really fair to expect the same from newbies? Especially those who have crossed over from windows? Atleast a minimal GUI should be there, and maybe it can say that for more flexibility, use console commands (see man rpm). That will help newbies not to get scared!! It's all about usability.
And this is actually there on SuSE. I just tried it out. Opened Konqueror, single clicked on transcode rpm (of course single click/double click can be configured in KDE), and konqueror opened that rpm as 3 sub-tabs: 1) description 2) Changelog 3) Files And at the top were 2 buttons: 1) Install package with YaST. 2) Use directory as source with YaST Clicking on the install button prompted for root password. When given the right password, it fired up YaST and installed the package. (There's a catch though, when YaST came up, it showed the search package page. Just clicking on Finish without selecting anything resulted in transcode getting installed.) Now that's welcome. I doubt newbies will want anything more. So let's stop the rant, please!! > ah. second point, and I think I totally messed this up. I totally > support the view that very common questions should not be asked on the > list at all. Google and RTM first, no doubt. But why get irritated if someone asks a basic question? If you don't want to answer, just ignore!! After all, who decides what is basic/common? For newbies, everything is new. C'mon guys, we all were newbies at some time. Let's welcome the newbies, rather than scare them away. Else the misconception that linux is only for geeks will never go!! > my point? Lets have a FAQ. Put all the common questions and answers > there. Direct any questions on the list to the FAQ. This way, atleast > the person gets a quick answer... even usenet lists have FAQ's which > people are urged to go to first. (Abhijit(BAIN) made a great start > some days ago with that wiki) Even I've felt the need for a search tool on PLUG website. Google's site search helps though: <search term> site:www.plug.org.in I think a search box on PLUG webpage would be useful 'cos so many times I remember having seen a discussion on some topic in PLUG, but search through the archieves takes so much time!! And even with FAQ, as it gets bigger and bigger, I end up using Ctrl+F of the browser to lookup some relevant term in the FAQ page!! :-) So a site search option would be such a big help, as it'll cover the entire mailing list archieve, rather than some select FAQs.. > Important to note: This is not a, developer, or an enthusiast list. I agree 110% Regards, Kapil [PS: I've changed the topic back to the original as this mail DOES contain one solution to the original question!! :-) ] -- "The Power to Imagine, is The Power to Create!" -TTux -- ______________________________________________________________________ Pune GNU/Linux Users Group Mailing List: ([email protected]) List Information: http://plug.org.in/mailing-list/listinfo/plug-mail Send 'help' to [EMAIL PROTECTED] for mailing instructions.
