At the time that Nokia signed the deal with Microsoft, it was obvious to everyone (except Nokia, it seems) that Windows OS had no momentum on mobile. Tying up exclusively with Microsoft was like jumping into a well with a millstone round their neck. Having reduced themselves into a hardware player (since they had scuppered their OS) they should have been platform agnostic and decided to make handsets with OSes that their customers preferred.
