The MAX232 can be used for a data cable for 5V Nokia phones (e.g. 6110).
However the newer phones are 3.3V and you need the MAX3232.

But a MAX3232 is? I was kinda pointing out that a cable and the chip are
similar in price..

They is not available locally. I want one myself, so I can control XMMS
(MP3 player for Gtk/X) using a TV remote control. But a friend of mine who
was designing an IrDA stack couldn't find any of the emitters (they have
an HP part number). And in any case they cost WAY over P 1,000. I was just
wondering if maybe you already _had_ the IrDA transceiver.
