Depending on which distribution you are using
startup scripts will be setup differently.

Try looking at these :

For Slackware : /etc/rc.d/

For Redhat: 
you can run /usr/sbin/setup  to choose which services  you want activated. 
try looking at  /etc/rc.d/rc.local also ...
