AFAIK, it's just that the pts/x convention is defined by Unix98, and the
ttypx convention is an older BSD holdover. The only advantage I know of
will be you're no longer constrained by the number of ttypx devices you
happen to have; /dev/pts/ will contain as many entries as you have
logins. You probably didn't compile devpts support and the devpts
filesystem into the 2.2.14 kernel, which is why you still wind up using
the ttypx convention. Either that, or you have glibc older than 2.1
and/or lack the associated tools, but that's unlikely.
