I think this has been mentioned before, but people seem to
forget. Since I am the oldest (age-wise) in the PLUG
list, I think it is my duty to remind PLUGgers of basic
email etiquette:
1. When responding to one line in a fifty-line message,
please delete the 49 lines and quote only the one line
you are responding to. This makes your email shorter,
easier to read, and saves a lot on band width. Besides
your reader gets irritated when he is forced to go through
a lot of garbage that you force on him.
2. When your response to a long message is just to say "yes"
or "I agree" or "okay", please do not bother responding.
You are not adding any intelligence to the already overcrowded
traffic by doing so. However, to say "Thank you" when you
get help from the list is welcome.
3. The IPHIL majordomo always adds trailer lines to all our
postings, and if you do not delete them in your response,
they accumulate and it is easy to get many generations of
these trailers. Use your text editor/mail composer to
generously cut out text that should not be part of your message.
Laziness is not acceptable in this list.
4. Many mail readers prefix your email with an intro line
of the form:
"One such-date so-and-so wrote:"
if ( strcmp("so-and-so","PLUG") == 0
|| strcmp("so-and-so", "you") == 0 ) {
/* then you have wasted your time and ours --
just like this piece of code
*/
}
On the other hand, if your into line says something like,
"On May 4, 2000 2:00 p.m. Orly Andico wrote:"
then that makes a lot of sense!
By the way, Orly's postings are excellent examples of good
email. He quotes only what is necessary, and he always
says something useful and meaningful (sometimes a bit too
technical for me though).
