Might be Linux Philippines, but I'm not sure. :-)

None that I know is official. Some people did some surveys using the PLUG
mailing list before, though. I do not know how reliable the results were,
if there were any at all.

As far as I know Linux is most commonly used here for Internet-related
servers (web server, servers in ISPs). You'd have to wait for responses
from our (busy?) friends working in ISPs. This statement ("most commonly")
is my personal hunch.

If you want to know what I use my Linux boxes for:

1. Server:
a. File server (Samba)
b. Intranet web with database (MySQL, PHP, Apache)
c. E-mail gateway

2. Workstation:
a. Surfing box
b. Used to ssh into the server since I normally keep the server under a
hood
c. All-around office use (don't do too much StarOffice, though)

I'd go grab a distro first. I started out with a RedHat 5.2 boxed set.
Some others on the list started with perhaps more difficult to learn
distro's (or even some with no distros at all!) like perhaps Slackware
(please don't flame me for saying it's perhaps more difficult to learn).

The benefit of my going with the boxed set is that I had some paper to
read while I migrated from books-books-books to more online reading. I
even got myself a printed copy of Linux Undercover, which is a collection
of HOW-TOs. It was good for starters, since I wasn't used to reading
"books" online yet. Now I just download the HOWTO I need.

You can try out the following websites for whatever it's worth:

<http://www.redhat.com/> - you can order a boxed set from here

<http://www.linux.com/> - this has got a lot of things from newbie info to
tuneup and security stuff

<http://www.linuxcare.com/> - similar to linux.com, I think.

<http://www.linuxgazette.com/> - great reading!

Good luck! My recommendation for you: experiment. :-)
