Debian is nice because it first installs a set of basic utilities,
and then on first boot up, asks you to install the rest. You have full
control of what to install and of granularity. You can choose to install
individual packages or groups of packages. Debian 2.2 (potato) is much
easier to use than the older releases, and even comes with kernel 2.2.15!
You can't imagine the variety of choices of packages to install.
And of course the .deb style packing can determine package dependencies
automagically.
There is just one problem: You can not find iso-images of 2.2 since
it has just gone into freeze/testing stage. You might want to settle for
2.1r4 which is the latest stable release.

The basic Debian install is small, since base2_1.tgz is under 10MB.
You can add openssh or almost any package later.
