I'm trying to get my inkjet printer "working in Linux as good as it works
in Windoze." It's an HP810C (not a Winprinter). It does 600dpi text and
300dpi color. It has this thing called "HP PhotoRet II" which kicks in
when you select "best quality" mode.
Now with Ghostscript (I took the trouble of upgrading to version 6.01)
this command-line gives me the best results:
gs -sDEVICE=cdj670 -r600x600 -dBitsPerPixel=32 -dDepletion=2 \
-sOutputFile=casta85.prn casta85.ps
However it's a far cry from the "best quality" mode in Windoze. Note that
Ghostscript 6.01 also supports a cdj880 and cdj890 device but the HP810C
is not compatible with these.
Also setting the dpi to -r300x300 or -r600x600 makes no difference in
quality, it just slows down the Ghostscript rasterization (print speed is
the same).
So the question is: can I get the same level of print quality in Linux as
I do in Windoze? I was thinking about an error-diffusion dither
(Ghostscript uses a Floyd-Steinberg dithering algorithm by default) but
modifying Ghostscript is a nontrivial undertaking.
