Floyd-Steinberg *is* an error diffusion dither algorithm, if Foley's
book is to be believed (the Bible of computer graphics: "Computer
Graphics: Principles and Practice" 2/e). It's the most famous error
diffusion algorithm. Maybe HP found themselves a better algorithm
that's optimized for their printer and haven't told anyone.
