Aside from PowerChute, there are other possible apps that could work with the UPS,
although PowerChute would be best.

For non-APC UPSs, there's great resources on UPSs, including how to make a cable and
finding software for Linux, etc, on the Internet.

Here're some that I've found:

1. The Uninterruptable Power Source FAQ
<http://www.jetcafe.org/~npc/doc/ups-faq.html>

General UPS information.

2. The UPS How To Site
<http://sunsite.unc.edu/mdw/HOWTO/UPS-HOWTO.html>

Covers connecting a UPS to a Linux box, but has valuable information for all Unix
versions. Great vendor reviews and technical info.

3. NUT: Network UPS Tools: APC's smart protocol
<http://www.exploits.org/nut/library/apcsmart.html>

Describes the APC smart signalling protocol used by the higher-end APC units.
Discusses cabling, the protocol, status bits, alert messages, registers, and more.
Good reverse engineering work.

4. pf.c utility
<http://www.connix.com/~mlfarm/utilities.html>

>From Maple Lawn Farm is a freeware powerfail daemon to monitor a UPS for a signal
>that the power has failed and perform an orderly shutdown.

5. How to make a UPS DB-9 RS-232 Cable
<http://rak.isternet.sk/win/ldp/HOWTO/UPS-HOWTO-6.html>

Usenet posts discussing the details on making a serial cable that connects from the
serial port of the UPS to the computer.

6. UPS and UNIX
<http://www.stokely.com/unix.sysadm.resources/ups.html>
General links to UPS tech sites.

That's all I have so far.
