I doubt that using an ordinary DB-9 cable will do the trick. An ordinary DB-9 cable
with only two wires without the ground _might_ work, but it won't work so well. As
I've read, APC's UPS operate in "smart mode" and have a "smart protocol" for their
signaling. The site "NUT: Network UPS Tools: APC's smart protocol" describes in detail
all about the protocol and how to make your own cable, including the early results of
making a simple hook-up. Its URL is
<http://www.exploits.org/nut/library/apcsmart.html>.

Here is a snippet from that site:

RS-232 differences
Normal 9 pin serial connections have TxD on 3 and RxD on 2. APC's smart serial ports
put TxD on pin 1 and RxD on pin 2. This means you go nowhere if you use a normal
straight through serial cable. In fact, you might even power down the load if you plug
one of those cables in. This is due to the odd routing of pins - DTR and RTS from the
PC usually wind up driving the on/off line. So, when you open the port, they go high
and *poof* your computer dies.

The page is loaded with the serial cable information. However, as it says, you may
find it a bit disappointing to buy PowerChute just for the cable.
