i use something called vnc. i am not sure if it suits your needs. but you
might as well give it a try.

you mean upgrade from redhat 6.0 to redhat 6.1. well right now i am doing
an upgrade it is as simple as booting off the redhat 6.1 CD and selecting
the upgrade option. then clicking "no". it automagically upgrades your
linux machine and prompts you to restart. that is it!

theoretically nope. the scripts you created and data files will remain
intact. if you made changes to the source code of those programs and
recompile them. these you will loose.

well normally, what i do it backup to a CDR. i am not very proficient at
this so i will leave it to the other people on the list to figure this
out.
backing up to tape is a lot easier simply use the "tar" program and treat
the tape device as the tar file.
