If your setup doesn't allow this, it's a limitation of your software and
not of the inherent protocols.

There are many virtual mail packages available. qmail has 2 packages that I
know of, but it's relatively easy to roll your own to allow hosting
multiple domains/users (with different POP3 usernmes) off of a single uid.
I'm sure postfix and sendmail have their own.
