The size of the file you can save is limited only by the max size
allowed under Linux (64bit unsigned int), and of course by the size 
of the medium on which you will save.

Mounting a partition with file system supported by linux (msdos, vfat,
ufs, etc) is pretty straightforward and safe.  It is a routine
sysadmin function.
