Under linux run the following:

1. fdisk/cfdisk to change the partition type
from Windows FAT to Linux native (83).
2. mke2fs -c /dev/hdaX # to format the partition X
3. mkdir /mountpoint
3. mount -t ext2 /dev/hdaX /mountpoint

You will want to mount hdaX automatically each time you boot
so you should edit /etc/fstab and add an entry like:

/dev/hdaX /mountpoint ext2 defaults 1 2

The commands 'man mount' and 'man fstab' will explain these
fstab entries.

By the way, these same commands can be used to install a new
hard disk.

Good luck!
