If they use standard RS-232 connectors, it should be trivial to hack powerd
to support them. Even if you don't have schematics, you should be able to
figure out which pins go up/down when the power goes low, goes out, comes
back up, battery low, etc. with a voltmeter and a couple of experiments
(e.g. pull the plug out of the wall).

I remember doing something like this for Ed Chainani and the ADMU NMR lab
in 1997. I don't remember what the UPS was.
