When Red Hat 6.2 detects you have an i686 based computer, it installs i686
compiled kernel (i586 for i585 based and i386 for 486s and 386s). If you
take a look at Red Hat's default configuration for the kernel, you'll see
that he option for disabling P-III serial numbers is enabled.

To solve this, you may either try recompiling your kernel without that
option checked or install the i586 kernel (check for the RPMS dir in your
CD). Of course, you may want to try installing Kernel 2.2.16. Download it
from Red Hat's site or just use the official kernel. :)
