Does your allowing telnet connections over your LAN mean that it is safe?
No. Telnet transmits data over the line in cleartext, just like FTP or
HTTP. It is therefore subject to being listened to, and is therefore not
safe. While there is no absolute in safety, having your data encrypted as
is the case when using SSH makes life more difficult for the potential
snooper. Some other users already recommended using OpenSSH. It's also
possible to use some other commercial SSH package.
