Derived from (WWII?) U.S. military slang, FUBAR. Now most commonly used as
a matched pair of metasyntactic variables. IMO, acceptable for didactic
purposes only.
I doubt it originated in the Army. I think US Navy has a greater propensity
for confusing acronyms.
