i never used knoppix but i do use some small distro based on it:

it comes with a backup and restore app (partition imager if i remember
it correctly)
that you can use to do a local or network backup.
u can also do a dd backup over ssh if you want (something like 'dd
if=/dev/hda1 | ssh target host dd of=/data/backup.img)
it's a 50 MB disto that u can burn on a credit card size cdr.
