exactly. its a reasoning that i cannot fully understand why people
think the membership is a pre-requisite or why would anyone
figuratively 'need' to have a membership to learn and contribute in
the FLOSS scene.

PLUG, the organization, is a non-profit organization. membership
should not bring you tangible benefits, the giddy feeling of knowing
that you are _contributing your time and resouces_ for the wide
adoption of FLOSS is only a bonus but not a requirement. you dont even
have to be a member to get that bonus. every acquaintance i have
swayed in using FLOSS (not necessarily GNU/Linux) is already giving me
that giddy feeling because i know i made a contribution. the PLUG name
does not even get into the picture at that point unless i see that the
person is really willing to learn the system. and then i advice them
to start reading documents and join the _mailing list_ not the
organization. if i swayed them to using mandrake i also tell them that
user board at http://mandrakeusers.org gives excellent support.

i dont know if i am making my point clear, but again the above
statements are my opinion only.

ciao!
