The only commodity SATA RAID cards you'd readily find here are the
Promise SATA RAID cards that you won't use in dmraid mode as Linux
kernel RAID is just so much better. Then again you won't be using your
SATA disks to its full capacity as mostly likely you're going to plug
them in to 32bit PCI disks which would negate the speed advantages of
SATA, as you can only go as fast as the PCI bus. I doubt you're to use
them in I/O intensive environments as unless you'd buy motherboards
that have a lot of 64bit PCI or PCI-X slots (which DOES cost a lot of
money) you'd have a problem in your hands.

Resorting to commodity boards with lots of SATA RAID cards also
introduces a new factor that increases your MTBF - the heat generated
by the SATA RAID cards would likely kill your setup. Commodity boards
aren't really designed to accomodate lots of heat from a lot of PCI
peripherals, which is a certain reality with RAID cards.
