The only commodity SATA RAID cards you'd readily find here are the Promise SATA RAID cards that you won't use in dmraid mode as Linux kernel RAID is just so much better. Then again you won't be using your SATA disks to its full capacity as mostly likely you're going to plug them in to 32bit PCI disks which would negate the speed advantages of SATA, as you can only go as fast as the PCI bus. I doubt you're to use them in I/O intensive environments as unless you'd buy motherboards that have a lot of 64bit PCI or PCI-X slots (which DOES cost a lot of money) you'd have a problem in your hands. Resorting to commodity boards with lots of SATA RAID cards also introduces a new factor that increases your MTBF - the heat generated by the SATA RAID cards would likely kill your setup. Commodity boards aren't really designed to accomodate lots of heat from a lot of PCI peripherals, which is a certain reality with RAID cards. -- Paolo Alexis Falcone [EMAIL PROTECTED] _________________________________________________ Philippine Linux Users' Group (PLUG) Mailing List [email protected] (#PLUG @ irc.free.net.ph) Read the Guidelines: http://linux.org.ph/lists Searchable Archives: http://archives.free.net.ph
