I'm glad that you're curious about Emacs! Emacs is a really powerful
tool, and well worth investing time to learn. It grows with you. It
can be a simple editor when you start out and a sophisticated
development environment once you've gotten the hang of it.

Emacs is extensively documented. Try it out! Check out the help menu
or type C-h k and then select a menu item or press a keyboard
shortcut. Type C-h h to get help on help.

One of the best ways to learn Emacs is to plunge right into it. Don't
get intimidated by all the people who say Emacs is too complex. If you
learn that complexity a little bit at a time, it's easy to get the
hang of. For example, you can start getting to know it as a text
editor, using the menus to find your way around. Try out the tutorial
under the help menu. It will introduce you to many handy functions.

Another great way is to have a friend help you set up Emacs the way
you want it to, and then gradually explore from there. One of my
friends tried out Emacs when he saw me using flashcard.el to study
Japanese. I set up his Emacs for him, showed him how to play around
with it, and even tweaked it to fit his needs.

That's what the Planner community does, too. Planner is a personal
information manager for Emacs, and one of the things we really like
doing is help Emacs newbies get a hang of both Emacs and their life.
I'd love to help you set up Planner on your computer, or you can give
it a shot by checking out
http://www.emacswiki.org/cgi-bin/wiki/PlannerModeQuickStart . Using
Emacs for more than just text editing gives you plenty of incentive to
take advantage of its powerful features such as customization, and
we'd be glad to help you get into it.

I also like helping people discover what else they can do with Emacs.
If you describe what you want to do, I might be able to find or hack
together Emacs stuff to fit your needs. <laugh>

I'm really crazy about Emacs because it's something that you can
easily customize to fit you. Unlike any other program I know, it
really lets you tweak it and improve on it. I hope you have as much
fun with Emacs as I do!
