Emacs was my first editor on Linux for a different reason: when Jijo
lent me his Redhat 6.2 CDs some years ago, Emacs was the nearest
available to a modeless text editor, and the default install didn't
include any other text editor at the GNOME panel (as the menu entry
was Text Editors->Emacs). I didn't know then the keystrokes (just used
icons at the menu bar, then tried experimenting with the save command
Ctrl-x Ctrl-s). Sure was easier to grasp compared to vi (as I really
didn't know about vi being a modal editor). It took me quite some time
to get accustomed to vi (which was made worse with my first try of
Debian defaulting to nvi).
