So you don't have to type 'emacs -nw' every time, configure putty *not* to set up an X11 tunnel: http://the.earth.li/~sgtatham/putty/0.58/htmldoc/Chapter4.html#config-ssh-x11 Check that panel, you might have had X11 tunneling turned on.
