jijo, i hope you don't mind my CC'ing this to PLUG.

Oh, say, 7 or 8 years ago, I wouldn't "get" me. :P
I think it's part of the natural evolution of the geek. hahahahahahaha.

the funny thing is, i still do a lot of these duct-tape solutions. for
example, a friend of mine wants to make a CNC machine *for engraving
tombstones* (you know, the thing over which a priest says "dearly
beloved."

i've done the design already (farming out the mechanical fabrication
to another friend..) but the electronics and CNC software is my area
of expertise. and i make no excuses, it really IS a duct-tape solution
-- Linux-based of course, software is EMC driving a primitive stepper
motor driver attached to the parallel port --

in other words, the epitome of duct-tape. BUT IT'S NOT SOMETHING I
COULD DO CHEAPLY IN WINDOWS. Not to mention i wouldn't know where to
start.. (and commercial X-Y CNC devices which a 1m x 1m workspace
start at $15000 and go up at a frightening rate)

and that's how it goes. for a geek, particularly a well-evolved geek,
it's easy to cobble together something to do ANYTHING using linux and
Free software. but when the time comes to productize that.. it's
something i wouldn't wish on Mr. Berris. :)
