In my short experience doing real projects both free and commercial, I have used "duct-tape" solutions as well. And like every geek I experienced personal satisfaction. However, it bothers me that after turning over the project, the client calls for technical support even for minor problems (like changing an IP address). A cost-effective packaged solution with good graphical interface is always welcome in my book.
