ah, good idea.
yes, the r50e has the ac'97 modem too.
but the r50e doesn't have a serial port. :(

maybe the original poster can try usb modems or pccard modems.

And I wouldn't hold out a great deal of hope for success.  Prior to my
present laptop, I owned an IBM ThinkPad iSeries 1200, and I never, ever
got its internal modem to work on GNU/Linux.  If the grandparent's
laptop is anything like that one, it's an AC'97 modem which as of this
writing still doesn't have a proper Linux driver.  Frankly, I've given
up on this.  To do dialup, I use an external modem. :(
