Hello, hello,

I am currently gathering information on how to setup a
RAID-1 File Server in my home-office network. I'd
appreciate it if you could help me out on which
redirection to go.

My Requirements:
- Storage device for SVN server repositories, MySQL
catalogs, file backups (using rsync), audio and
personal files
- Client OSes are Linux, Windows, and MacOS X

Specs of my current server:
- Pentium III 800Mhz with 1.0 GB of RAM
- Single on-board IDE controller
- 15GB HDD with Mandrake Linux 9.2.

Additional hardware I'm planning to buy:
1. Two (2) Maxtor DiamondMax10 300GB 7200 16MB ATA-133
2. An additional ATA controller

Documentation:
http://www.tldp.org/HOWTO/Software-RAID-HOWTO.html

Below are my questions:

1. Since I'm buying another ATA card, I might as well
just buy a similarly priced RAID card. I found one
card:

Cables Unlimited UltraATA 133 RAID PCI
http://tinyurl.com/7coy5

- Has anyone used this card with Linux before?

It's a cheap card compared to most RAID cards and may
be enough for my requirements.

I'm still trying to find out if the card works on
Linux since most of the cheap cards only have Windows
drivers. Which makes me think that it might be
software-based much like WinModems are on Windows. Is
it?

2. There are Serial ATA controllers that are on the
cheap-side as well. Below is one such card:

Cables Unlimited Serial ATA 2-Port RAID card
http://tinyurl.com/8w56u

The documentation says it works with Linux which is
good.

- Will I be better of just using Serial ATA instead of
ATA? ('Need to read more on this)

- How's SATA support on Linux?

3. Any bad experience with Maxtor DiamondMax 10 HDDs?

I'd appreciate tips and/or suggestions.

Thanks,

jeff --
