Qemu (open source) + the kqemu (free as in free lunch) is fast. Not yet as fast as VMWare, but it's getting there. (Disclaimer: the last version of VMWare that I tried was 2.x. I don't know what performance improvements were implemented on newer versions of VMWare.) -- Gideon N.
