Oops, this is another can of worms to open again! ;) Anyhow, you can
take your pick from the many server-oriented distributions in
DistroWatch[1], or in LWN's list[2].  Personally, I would just put
Debian Sarge in it, bake a custom kernel, and tweak just about
everything from sysctl to the boot sequence to get it up and running
just the way I want it ;)

I've heard the same complaints from the FC4 users at Naga; I don't know
much about what causes this myself, but I suspect one can always do some
rc.d script tweaking and remove unnecessary/unwanted startup action.

The operative word here is `non-critical'; if you're just using this
caching server for, say, worktime internet browsing, you *could* try
Fedora (as long as you keep your boss informed ;).  Otherwise, if you
have an intranet and would want to speed communications between
departments, I would recommend using a distro with commercial AND
community support.
