Quoting J R <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>:
hello list, its been a while since i have updated my self in the different
hardwares out there, and now i'm planing to buy a new PC and i'm a bit
getting confused what/which is to buy, P4 or AMD64.
i need fast processing that can handle lots of application running at the
same time including some server application (e.g. apache) and graphic and
multimedia tool (e.g. adobe and macromedia) and perhaps some VM. i'm not
sure yet what OS to use XP or Ubuntu (but as of the moment i'm thinking of
using ubuntu)
This topic is really OT here :)
My take - just take what your budget can afford.
<FLAME ON>If you want more efficient computing, don't want higher power bills
due to CPU cooling, and a lower price tag for consumer editions, just go with
an AMD64 (the socket 939 AMD implementation and not the LGA775 Intel EM64T,
that is). An Athlon64 or a single-core Opteron 100 series would be a good buy,
as dual-core chips are really freaking expensive at present.</FLAME OFF>
Personally I would really really want an UltraSPARC T1-based rig for a
webserver
(75W? 8-core? 32-thread? Wow! Not real SMP and sucks at floating point but I
rarely need that for web server purposes), or a dual PowerPC 970MP (dual-core?
SMP? Linux works great on these processors too), but the prices are just way
off my reach :(
