Why separate?
I have a linux box (P4 2.0G, 1MB RAM, and about 200GB
of total HD space) and they are running:
Postfix+SpamAssassin+ClamAV
DNS and DHCP
Samba for File and Print services
LDAP (for a common e-mail address book)
for >150 users in 3 separate geographic lcoations, and
the response time is ok (read: I don't receive
complains from the users).
and another old P3-750 with 256MB memory and 24GB
(RAID-5) box running LAMP for Bugzilla, dotProject and
test installation of various PHP-based webapps like
phpBB, MediaWiki, SugarCRM, etc.
I'm actually planning on getting a supersized server
to consolidate all these services into -- a box with 2
dual core processors (Intel or AMD), loads of RAM and
HD space (4xIDE with software RAID) and dual power
supply. This is because of plans to go live on the
various webapps I'm currently testing.
The only concern here would be a single-point of
failure. This is whre the old boxes would come in --
as a warm backup.
The only thing I've separated is my linux
firewall/proxy.
